The League Challenge Trophy is now live in This Is Football. Built for Division 3 and Division 4 clubs, it adds a second knockout target for lower-division managers while keeping the normal season rhythm intact.
The competition has now progressed successfully through multiple seasons of the living game. Its purpose is simple: clubs outside the top two divisions should have a meaningful cup they can realistically pursue, without being separated from the wider football world.
A 40-club competition in every league location
All 20 Division 4 clubs enter first. Four are drawn at random to receive preliminary-round byes, while the remaining 16 play eight one-off ties. The eight winners join the four clubs with byes, creating 12 Division 4 survivors.
Those 12 clubs then join all 20 Division 3 teams in a Round of 32. From there, the Trophy follows a straightforward knockout path through the Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.
Designed around the existing season
Trophy rounds take place on designated matchdays across the season. They do not introduce separate countdowns or slow the shared world between rounds. Home advantage is decided by the draw in each round, while the final is treated as a neutral match.
A manager’s saved league line-up, formation, substitutes and tactical settings are not overwritten by Trophy selection. Where the rotation option is used, the game creates a temporary match squad and respects positions, goalkeeper cover, injuries, suspensions, fitness and player availability.
What happens when a club is short of players?
The Trophy uses eligible real players rather than inventing replacements. A club with between seven and ten available players can still take the field, but does so under strength. If only one club has fewer than seven eligible players, it loses administratively. If neither club can field seven, the tie is resolved administratively so that the competition can continue safely.
Administrative outcomes are clearly labelled. Because no match was played, the game does not create fictional statistics, line-ups, player events or highlights for them.
Prizes, history and a place in the cabinet
In-game completion prizes increase as clubs progress, from £25,000 for a preliminary-round exit to £600,000 for the runner-up and £1 million for the winner. These awards are virtual club funds used within This Is Football—not real-money prizes—and are completion-only rather than cumulative, keeping the financial scale clear.
The winning club receives an official cabinet honour, while the manager gains the appropriate achievement and career record. The runner-up is also preserved in competition and career history, but does not receive silverware or an honours count. AI-controlled clubs receive equivalent club-history records, so the Trophy becomes part of every location’s permanent story.
Status: live. The League Challenge Trophy is operating in the persistent game world. Its results contribute to official all-competition and knockout records while remaining separate from league tables and league-only statistics.
